What is just in time learning?

JIT training naturally works best with learning materials using the microlearning approach as lessons are quick to create, easy to distribute and readily absorbed by the learners. It also works best with latest technologies like mobile learning whereby interactive microlessons can be distributed to a worker’s own mobile device and, as such, are available just by reaching into one’s pocket – there’s no need to set-up a laptop or carry around a stack of old, printed-out, single-page PDF microlessons that may or may not be out of date.

Just-in-time training (JITT, also called point-of-need training) is a methodology that provides personalised training on-demand according to what a specific situation requires. That demand could involve reactively plugging a knowledge hole but thanks to learning technologies, machine learning, big data, A.I. plus enhanced analytics, JIT training is becoming increasingly predictive. This brings with it opportunities for organisations to automatically maintain and enhance workforce performance while significantly reducing errors.

There are many scenarios where JIT training is already being used. Casual, unskilled workers can learn about operating a new machine or work practice shortly before starting work for the first time. Retail staff can learn about the latest products, marketing display layouts and sales techniques when new stock arrives. Travelling sales people can pull up outside a client’s business, run through JIT training-based sales-enablement lessons, get briefed on relevant subject matter and perform personalised soft skills training on overcoming objections based on previous interactions.

This JIT training process is further enhanced through peer learning and the increasing capabilities of learning management systems’ rapid authoring tools. If a co-worker has had previous learning experience of dealing with a particular person or organisation, then they are very well placed to create a microlesson which explains the best (and the worst) ways for colleagues to approach a meeting. If a co-worker hasn’t yet had the chance to create a lesson, using a rapid SCORM authoring tool allows a lesson to be created in minutes and instantly distributed to the worker’s device. By leveraging the expertise of your workers in this way, you also help make them feel valued and happier in their work.

Advances in technology are enhancing JIT training further. At a basic level, it will be possible to integrate one’s calendar with a learning management system so that relevant microlessons regarding attendees and subject matter can automatically be distributed to invitees shortly before the meeting. A step up from this will see peers, who aren’t involved with the meeting, being automatically contacted and asked to contribute advice in advance.

On a grander scale, a company with multiple, regional offices may see one part of the organisation report figures that represent lowkey performance indicators. Over time, that instructional design data can be analysed with A.I. to the point where failure can be predicted before it occurs and appropriate JIT courses distributed to address issues before they develop.

What’s next for Just in time (JITT or JIT training)?

While the age of PDF printout-based microlearning is mercifully coming to an end, we’re still some way from large-scale, rapidly-authored, JIT training virtual reality role play environments to be easily delivered and accessed ‘just-in-time’ but the technology is already in-progress. For the foreseeable future, simply using learning platforms in mobile devices which allow courseware to be created quickly, updated quickly, and distributed instantly is the optimal JIT training approach.
