Peer to Peer Learning App

Peer Learning is one of the most effective forms of company training – it makes lessons easier to relate to which subsequently makes them more engaging to learners. L&D Experts agree that it should make up some 30 per cent of all training. It works well as a standalone methodology but can also augment existing learning systems. So what is it and how can you make it work for you?

What is Peer Learning?

Peer to Peer Learning is when the teacher is a colleague. This is the opposite to traditional eLearning where course designers are often disconnected from the learner (and even the learner’s institution). When a colleague is teaching, their context, reference points and personality are more relatable to a learner which makes lessons more engaging. This in turn improves the likelihood of knowledge retention. Peer learning and Peer Collaboration works best with microlearning as the small lessons can be quickly and easily created by the user themselves (or with minimal assistance). Peer authoring can mean the same things but relates more to the process of creating peer learning.

Being talked at by strangers (or interacting with their eLearning courseware) is less engaging than learning from one’s peers.

How to use a peer to peer learning app

There are two main ways to peer authoring with microlearning:

Templates – If your microlearning authoring tool utilises templates, all you need to do is add your own questions and answers to existing modules. This is one of the simplest ways to quickly create engaging content.

Dedicated peer authoring feature – Look for a mobile learning-based LMS that allows users to video themselves teaching – and then invite comments from users. While this represents a crossover with a social learning app, it’s a very simple way for employees to quickly inform others about how to perform a task.

Benefits of a Peer to Peer Learning App

Peer learning provides various benefits to organisations and employees within them. Colleagues are able to learn from each other, promoting the value of collaboration. This can occur through the incorporation of video in the training strategy, whereby learners are able to process visuals of their peers carrying out essential tasks which they can replicate.
